“Q. My faith in the Church as an institution has been totally shattered. Hos can I ever respect a corrupt church? A. Think of one way that an orange is different to a potato. One bad spot in the orange and the whole fruit is contaminated. One black spot in a potato can be picked out and the remainder is grand. The Church, I suggest, is the potato rather than the orange. The regrettable behaviour of a small minority does not mean that the entire Church is corrupt. The behaviour of Judas or the lies told by Peter did not mean the apostles were entirely corrupt. The idea of an all perfect church is a figment of romantic desire far removed from the kingdom of weeds and wheat.” Fr. Silvester O’Flynn.

“Q. What did Jesus mean in saying “Anyone who wants to save his life will lose it: but anyone who loses his life for my sake will save it”? One of the fundamental errors of our age is the exaggerated focus on self-seeking, putting me at the centre of everything. Jesus regarded self-seeking as a disastrous programme for life. But self-denial in the service of love is the sure way to develop our human potential and reach deep fulfillment in life. It is in giving that we receive.” Fr. Silvester O’Flynn.

“Lord Jesus, increase my hunger for you and show me the way that leads to everlasting peace and happiness. May I desire you above all else and find perfect joy in doing your will.”

CARING FOR OUR SICK AND RETIRED PRIESTS: The retirement age for priests of this diocese is 75. When our present retirement policy for priests was brought in, the age profile meant that a commercial pension plan was not possible, so the Diocese had to provide for our retired priests. Parishes gave 5% of the door collection. Since 2001, this contribution has risen to 7.5%. As the number of retired priests grew, more funds were needed to support them, so six years ago an annual collection for retired priests was added. You will find a special envelope in your box for this collection. A generous response to this collection this year will help the Diocese to continue to be able to care for our retired priests, most of whom have given over fifty years of service to us.

A sincere thank you to all who prepared for and took part in our annual Eucharistic Procession last Sunday. May God reward you.

In spite of problems and faults that may plague us individually as well as the Church itself, we are challenged to continue to proclaim a Gospel which is always good news for the poor and downtrodden. The Gospel is good news not because we are so good and wonderful but because our God is good and wonderful. It is God’s love and mercy, symbolized in the wounded Heart of Jesus, that we wish to have in our own hearts and share with others. If our wounded hearts can be a humble reflection and sacrament of His Heart, then we can accomplish the tremendous mission we have been given. Since His Heart is filled with hope and confidence, ours must be the same. “It is I. Do not be afraid” are his words to us and ours to the world. Sacred Heart of Jesus I place all my trust in You on your feastday and every day.

God bless all. Fr. Anthony O’Brien 4642363 087 6834193 aob79@eircom.net
